Most houses here in the Midlands have some type of porch or room off the front or an addition or sunroom off the back. And many houses have dormers. Where these additions or dormers stick out they create valleys, and unfortunately a lot of times, leaks. Shingle manufacturers and building inspectors know these are problem areas and have established guidelines to ensure there is no way for water to get in the house.
