One of the most important processes in installing a new roof is removing all of the old material, including shingles, felt and the old nails. Most roofing companies, at least here in South Carolina, don’t take the time to remove the old felt; they just remove the shingles and replace the felt only where any large areas come off. By not removing everything the roofer can save time and money, which will allow them to give a really cheap estimate to you. The obvious problem with doing the roof this way is not being able to see what is under the shingles and any problems that are there are simply covered over and not addressed. On this project in Columbia, after the felt was removed, rotten wood, cracked boards, and old nails were found. The homeowner can now be assured that the roof is nailed to a strong surface, one that is not warped or rotten. Also, make sure the attic is inspected during the estimating process to ensure the roofers know what kind of wood is up there and what, if any, ventilation concerns there are.
